What does Return On Investment (ROI) mean?

My college teacher asked us to study financial metrics. In my group I’m responsible for providing an explanation about Return On Investment (ROI), but I don’t get it. How do I measure it? Do we need accounting for that? Sounds more like a business investment thing. And, after all, why is this “ROI” important?
