Please help with metric conversions!?

What I really want is a site that will explain conversions across units of measurements. For example: The text says "Because a milliliter is equivalent to 1 cubic centimeter...". How do we know that? How can you convert between two different units of measurement? Please lead me somewhere that will explain such conversions.
